Wearable-derived heart rate variability and inflammation in psoriatic arthritis
Prof. Leontios Hadjileontiadis (AUTH), coordinator of iPROLEPSIS, presented the iPROLEPSIS paper “Wearable-Derived Heart Rate Variability as a Digital Biomarker of Inflammation in Psoriatic Arthritis” at the 12th IEEE World Forum on the Internet of Things (WF-IoT 2026, 26 – 29 October 2026), hosted for the first time in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
The study investigated whether heart rate variability (HRV), derived from smartwatch beat-to-beat interval recordings, is associated with inflammatory activity in psoriatic arthritis. It analysed data from 105 patients in the first 14 days after recruitment, with 79 patients retained after filtering for data coverage.
Time-domain HRV markers (RMSSD, SDNN and the HRV triangular index) were lower in flare groups and negatively correlated with C-reactive protein (CRP). The authors conclude that these results support the potential of wearable-derived HRV as a digital biomarker for remote inflammation monitoring in psoriatic arthritis.
